BMOS: Essential for Applications Using Backup Batteries
Gia Bach | October 17, 2021 07:17
BMOS is a system for managing and monitoring voltage, current, internal resistance, temperature, and optimizing the performance of each battery in a static battery bank.
BMOS is a battery monitoring and optimization system that helps track battery health, prevent sudden failures, protect, extend lifespan, and optimize battery performance. This application was developed by Welgun – Dai Trang Vietnam JSC, a company specializing in IoT services such as consulting and implementation, headquartered in Ho Chi Minh City.
According to Welgun, the battery monitoring and management system market in Vietnam is currently in its infancy, and because this product will be used in systems requiring stringent technical specifications, compatibility, and operation, there are always barriers to market entry. It is for this reason that BMOS has participated in innovation competitions to raise awareness of the product.

3 Outstanding Advantages
Welgun’s comprehensively developed BMOS is suitable for a wide range of applications. Its main features include: battery voltage balancing, extended battery life, increased battery capacity, prevention of sudden battery temperature spikes, battery string protection, compact design, wireless connectivity, hydrogen content measurement, easy maintenance, always-on internet connectivity, sulfate prevention, monitoring, and alerts…
According to Mr. Le Bao Quoc, head of Welgun’s BMOS team: “BMOS is a necessary innovation for applications using backup battery power in industries such as telecommunications, transportation, defense, etc. Like other battery monitoring systems, BMOS has online, real-time monitoring functions for indicators such as voltage, current, battery temperature, room temperature, and wire temperature to provide timely alerts and predictions.” “This contributes to reducing costs, labor, maintenance, and warranty for battery systems.”
The BMOS solution has superior functions that few competitors possess. It even has functions that no competitors have.
According to Mr. Le Bao Quoc, BMOS has three advantages that are almost non-existent among competitors on the market. Firstly, we use IoT technology, completely wireless connectivity, even power supply uses power from the battery, no power cables. The second advantage is the voltage balancing function of the batteries in the chain, which helps increase the efficiency of each battery and the entire battery chain, increasing battery lifespan by at least 30-50%. Thirdly, our survey has not found any manufacturer in the world that offers a battery protection function to prevent sudden or mass failure of the battery array when one or several batteries fail unexpectedly.
Specifically, the main functions of BMOS include: Balancing function, invented by Welgun, where BMOS actively adjusts the charging current of each battery to ensure that all batteries are charged at optimal voltage; continuously monitoring and balancing the floating charge/charging voltage of each battery to ensure the battery array always maintains full capacity and is ready for use;
Battery protection function, another invention by Welgun, a bypass feature that allows the battery system to continue operating normally even when one or several batteries are severely damaged and have not yet been replaced. BMOS proactively optimizes battery performance, increasing reliability and extending lifespan, whereas other battery monitoring systems simply monitor without taking action when the battery condition deteriorates, even before the risk of sudden total failure (sudden death). BMOS can also monitor current, ambient temperature (room temperature), humidity, and hydrogen levels in the room for Ni-Cad batteries.
BMOS can also send alerts via voice calls, email, SMS, Zalo, etc. It stores and reports up to 3 years of operational history in Excel and chart formats. Sends monitoring and alert information via remote control and monitoring systems such as SCADA…
Has wide application potential in both industrial and residential sectors.
BMOS is designed for lead-acid and Ni-Cad batteries from 1.2V-12V, both open (VLA) and sealed (VRLA) types, in battery systems for substations, telecommunications, UPS systems, and energy storage systems in renewable energy projects… Individual battery monitoring modules and battery string monitoring modules connect to the central control box via Wi-Fi, controlled by BMOS Local Server and Web Server software, also developed by Welgun. It features compact installation and easy configuration.
Basic monitoring parameters of the BMOS: Voltage, capacity, internal resistance, temperature of each individual battery, battery linkage between batteries, temperature of the monitoring module.
Monitoring parameters if additional accessories are selected: Current, room temperature, humidity, hydrogen concentration in the air.
BMOS is manufactured in compliance with Industry Standard 11TCN 19-2006 Electrical Equipment Code; TCVN 7326-1 (IEC 60950-1) IT Equipment – Safety; IEC 61010-2-030 Safety of measuring equipment; Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC); Battery maintenance procedures (VN, NERC PRC-005, Manufacturer).
For industrial customers (power, telecommunications, energy, defense, etc.), Welgun’s technical team will directly install and provide a 3-year warranty and maintenance for the BMOS system.
Meanwhile, for individual customers (car battery monitoring devices), Welgun will sell BMOS through online channels and dealers. Welgun’s dealers will handle warranty and maintenance. The product will be replaced within the warranty period (1 year). Welgun also stated that the company is seeking opportunities to cooperate with electric vehicle battery and energy storage device manufacturers, as battery monitoring and optimization systems are a crucial component of these products.
Currently, although BMOS is not yet commercialized, its application is being tested at the Tan An 110KV substation (Long An Power Company). The development team is also in discussions with Viettel Lab to conduct testing at a Viettel base station.
The goal for BMOS over the next three years is the domestic market, targeting sectors such as electricity (1500-2000 110KV-500KV substations using backup battery chains); telecommunications (approximately 250,000 BTS stations using backup battery chains); transportation, and all vehicles using batteries. It will also be applied in other sectors such as defense and commerce that utilize backup battery chains.
